What Is Gator SuperSand G2 Polymeric Sand?
Gator SuperSand G2 is Alliance's second-generation intelligent polymeric sand for standard residential paver and natural stone installations. It's the workhorse of the G2 lineup — designed for joints up to 2" on a traditional drainage base, with the same no-dust, no-haze, no-blower formula that makes the G2 series stand apart from first-generation polymeric sands.
When you activate SuperSand G2 with water, the intelligent polymers bind the sand tightly into the joint while neutralizing dust and haze in a single pass. No blower step, no multi-stage watering. Just sweep, compact, and water. Rain-safe in 15 minutes.
Once cured, the joint hardens into a firm but flexible bond — strong enough to resist weeds, ants, washout, and freeze-thaw movement, while still flexing slightly with the natural movement of a paver installation. Available in Beige and Slate Grey.

What Gator SuperSand G2 Keeps Out of Your Paver Joints
A properly installed G2 polymeric sand joint keeps weeds out, keeps insects out, and resists erosion. Here's how SuperSand G2 handles each:
Weed sprouting in paver joints — polymer-locked joints leave no loose soil for weed seeds. Weeds growing up through joints become rare
Ant tunneling & insect damage — ants can't tunnel through a hardened G2 joint, preventing the base destabilization that leads to sunken pavers
Rain & wind erosion / washout — regular paver sand washes out after heavy storms. SuperSand G2's polymer bond holds the joint material firmly in place
Freeze-thaw cracking — G2 stays flexible after curing so it expands and contracts with temperature swings rather than cracking and falling out

SuperSand G2 does not prevent moss, mold, or mildew — those come from shade, moisture, and poor drainage on-site, not from the jointing sand itself.

How Many Bags of SuperSand G2 Do You Need?
Coverage depends heavily on joint width — more than most people expect. Numbers below are from the official Alliance Gator Technical Data Sheet for pavers 2-3/8" (6 cm) tall. Always order 10–15% extra for waste.

Minimum joint depth: 1½" (38 mm) — entire depth must be SuperSand G2, not half on top of regular sand. Coverage based on pavers 2-3/8" (6 cm) tall per Alliance Gator official Technical Data Sheet. Quantity required depends on paver shape, size, and joint width.
The most common installation mistake — starting on pavers that aren't fully dry. Any moisture activates the polymers early, leaving white residue on pavers. Wait for a dry day, or give pressure-washed pavers at least 24–48 hours. All pavers must be interlocked per ICPI Tech Spec #2 traditional base. Do not apply over asphalt. SuperSand G2 is for traditional drainage base only — not for overlay applications.

Spread and sweep polymeric sand into all joints
Pour SuperSand G2 onto the dry surface. Use a hard-bristle broom to work it into every joint in multiple directions. Leave a thin layer on top for compaction. Narrow paver joints need extra passes — they won't fill in one sweep. Do not mix with other materials in the joints.

Compact with a plate compactor
Run a vibratory plate compactor with a rubber protective pad. Work in multiple directions to eliminate air pockets. Repeat sweeping and compacting until joints are fully packed. Sand level must end up at least 1/8" below the paver surface or chamfer edge.
ⓘ On textured or pre-finished pavers, clear all surface sand before compacting to avoid scratching the face.

Sweep off excess — no leaf blower needed
Hard-bristle broom first, then soft broom. With SuperSand G2 you stop here — no blower step. The G2 intelligent polymers keep residue in the joints rather than on the paver face.

Activate with water — shower setting, section by section
Set hose to shower setting. Start at the lowest point of the installation. Water each section for about 30 seconds until G2 repels the water and it begins pooling on the joints. Move immediately to the next section. Stop when you see standing water on the joints. Over-watering washes the sand out.
ⓘ On slopes and pool surrounds: always start at the lowest point and work upward. Starting at the top pulls sand downhill.

Stay off until fully cured
Rain-safe in 15 minutes after activation. The joints will form a firm crust on top — completely normal, by design. Keep foot traffic off for several hours. Keep vehicles off until fully cured.

Gator SuperSand G2 is low-maintenance compared to regular paver sand, but not zero-maintenance. Here's what we recommend from experience:
Routine cleaning: Gator Shampoo or paver-safe cleaner on the full surface including joints. Regular garden hose on shower setting at standard residential pressure — no pressure washing needed
White haze: Clean with Gator Efflorescence Cleaner. Usually efflorescence from the pavers triggered by water activation, or polymer residue from a slightly damp installation. Also fades naturally over time
Moss, mold, mildew: A drainage and shade problem, not a sand problem. Paver-safe surface cleaner handles it. Improve drainage and trim overhanging plants to prevent recurrence
Re-sanding: Remove all old jointing material completely first. Don't apply new SuperSand G2 on top of old sand. Pavers must be fully dry. Then follow installation steps 1–6
Leftover bags: SuperSand G2 ships in waterproof bags. Store lying flat, front facing up. Sealed bags are fine stored outdoors

If your joints are under 2" and you're on a traditional base, SuperSand G2 is the right — and often more affordable — choice.
No — SuperSand G2 is for traditional drainage base installations only. For pavers installed over an existing concrete slab (overlay application), you must use Gator Maxx G2. Its water-repelling formula is specifically engineered to handle the moisture conditions of an overlay installation.
Yes, completely normal and by design. The cured top layer forms a protective crust from chamfer to chamfer. The densely packed sand below is doing the structural work. This is documented behavior confirmed by the manufacturer — it is not a sign of installation failure.
White residue is typically efflorescence from the pavers triggered by water activation, or polymer residue from applying on pavers that weren't completely dry. Both respond well to Gator Efflorescence Cleaner. The haze also fades naturally over time. Prevent it next time by ensuring pavers are bone dry before starting.
No — SuperSand G2 is rated to a maximum joint width of 2" (5 cm). For joints over 2", use Gator Maxx G2 which is rated up to 4". Using SuperSand G2 in joints wider than spec may result in weak, crumbling joints over time.
No. G2's intelligent polymers don't leave residue on the paver face during application. A broom sweep after compaction is all you need before watering — one of the biggest time-savers compared to first-generation polymeric sands.
The polymers may never properly cure, leaving the sand weak and unable to lock your pavers. Always wait for temperatures above freezing, including overnight temperatures during the curing window.
Polymeric sand is a jointing sand mixed with polymer binders. When activated with water, those polymers harden the sand in the joint, locking pavers in place and resisting weeds, insects, and erosion. Regular paver sand washes out after rain, lets weeds grow through, and gives ants a clear path to burrow. SuperSand G2's G2 formula also eliminates the dust and haze problems common with first-generation polymeric sands.
